CAST IN INDIA
Artist: JS Cornelius
Location: Venice, California
In Venice, California, a strange manhole cover caught my eye. Curious, it prompted some research. Nearly 40 years ago, Indian businesses started supplying the US with cast iron manhole and sewage access covers. But recently, their business has multiplied, because they only charge a third of what US manufacturers do for the exact same work. Manhole covers with the huge, embossed “Made in India” labels serve as powerful illustrations of how cultural narratives are ingrained in our urban landscapes in the most unpredictable manner…
A conversation piece. A very interesting piece of art taken through the lens and visual humor of artist JS Cornelius, engineer/photographer who uses museum era cameras – which he can take apart and reassemble as a soldier does his weapon. Made for large format metal – this image also looks great as a signed and numbered limited edition, on canvas or paper.
