The Hôtel de Paris, Monte-Carlo, opened its doors in 1864. It is one of the most luxurious hotels in the world. Designed by architect Gobineau de la Brétonnerie and recently renovated by renowned architects Richard Martinet of Paris and Gabriel Viora of Monaco. The Formula 1 Grand Prix de Monaco has been run on the streets just outside the hotel since 1929. While working at the Cannes Film Festival, I get the call of a lifetime. Travel forty-five minutes from Cannes to Monte-Carlo on Sunday and get credentialed for the Casino Square VIP suite at the Hôtel de Paris – party and experience the Grand Prix from its iconic balcony – unequivocally the best seats in the house. The suite is usually taken by royalty or billionaires. My buddy is close to the Ferrari family. I was a McLaren fan at the time, but no way would I pass this up. It’s right above turn four, dubbed “Casino Square” as the Casino is directly across the street circuit. Vintage champagne flowed. The noise from the F1 cars was deafening – you feel it deep in your chest. So close, you feel like you can reach out and touch the carbon fiber. No cameras allowed in suite on race day, but I caught the balcony after the race that night from turn four, as we crossed the track to have drinks at the Casino. I’m also a Kimi Räikkönen fan, and the Flying Finn won the Grand Prix that day – in a red Ferrari.
